The Painful Presence of the Desert

Your name is my desert
and I can feel it
encrusted in my own territory.
Like a pearl
or a gesture in the void.
Like the bitter blue
and all that is illusory.
Your name is my desert
and it is so vast.
Your teeth so sharp
your angry suns
and your letter
(arrows of gold and silver
on my lips)
are my rosaries of painful mysteries.

A Presença Dolorosa do Deserto

Teu nome é meu deserto
e posso senti-lo
incrustado no meu próprio território.
Como uma pérola
ou um gesto no vazio.
Como o amargo azul
e tudo quanto há de ilusório.
Teu nome é meu deserto
e ele é tão vasto.
Seus dentes tão agudos
seus sóis raivosos
e suas letras
(setas de ouro e prata
nos meus lábios)
são o meu terço de mistérios dolorosos.

Translated by Rosângela Vieira-King
Revised by Dorianne Laux

É professora de Línguas e Estudos Africanos na Howard University e editora do The Journal of Africain and Africain-Latin American Studies and Literatures.

É autora dos livros Facts about the Moon, Awake e What we Carry.

DEATH COMES TO ME AGAIN, A GIRL

Death comes to me again, a girl
in a cotton slip, barefoot, giggling.
It's not so terrible she tells me,
not like you think, all darkness
and silence. There are windchimes
and the smell of lemons, some days
it rains, but more often the air is dry
and sweet. I sit beneath the staircase
built from hair and bone and listen
to the voices of the living. I like it,
she says, shaking the dust from her hair,
especially when they fight, and when they sing.
